Dinosaurs have filled many roles during their long cinematic history. As animals, monsters, and pets, they’ve been stomping and roaring their hearts out for almost as long as there have been movies. But they’ve rarely been heroes. I think it’s time to change that.
There are already a couple properties Hollywood could pick up to give us a bit of a superhero-dinosaur crossover. The one I remember most fondly is Dinosaucers. Talking alien dinosaurs that can revert back into their prehistoric forms when needed? I’m sold. And some of the casting should be easy. Can’t you just see Jack Black delivering Ankylo’s line “The Dinosaucers are getting away, Bossasaur!”
Not that heroic dinosaurs have to be kids’ stuff. The comic Dinosaurs For Hire had a darker edge, featuring a team of extraterrestrial dinosaurs that decided to get into the mercenary business upon crash-landing on Earth. If played with the right amount of self-aware humur – think 21 Jump Street – a big screen adaptation of the defunct comic could introduce audience to hilarious, hardcore dinosaurs.
And really, if there’s going to be a movie based on Hungry Hungry Hippos, Hollywood should at least entertain the concept of heroic dinosaurs tearing across the big screen.
