Name: Scutellosaurus lawleri
Meaning: Scutellosaurus means “little shield lizard”, while lawleri honours David Lawler, who collected the first known skeleton of the dinosaur.
Age: Jurassic, around 196 million years ago.
Where in the world?: Arizona
Size: About 4 feet long.
How much of the dinosaur’s body is known?: A pair of partial skeletons, including many osteoderms, but lacking most of the skull.
Claim to fame: Scutellosaurus was one of the earliest and smallest of armoured dinosaurs. Covered in rows of bony armour from head to tail, this little herbivore walked on two legs and its bones give paleontologists a rough idea of what the ancestors of the later stegosaurs and ankylosaurs looked like.
